Not many patients know that part of the dental veneer treatment process involves wearing “temporary veneers” for about a week or two. Unlike “permanent” veneers, temporary veneers are made from simple acrylics or resin, and come in preselected shapes and sizes. Since they’re clearly a budget-version of your permanent, highly customized set, you might be wondering why you have to wear them in the first place!
Rest assured; there are several good reasons for this, and you can learn more about them below.
Temporary Veneers Protect Your Teeth
To prevent your permanent veneers from looking overly bulky and strange, your dentist will shave off a small sliver of your natural enamel. This layer is responsible for protecting the more vulnerable parts of a tooth from bacteria and infection, so walking around without some sort of replacement is likely to result in a case of cavities. Temporary veneers will shield your pearly whites from harm while the dental lab works to customize your permanent set.
They Deflect Hot and Cold Sensations
Another thing your enamel does is dull hot and cold sensations. If your teeth hurt after you eat ice cream or freshly baked brownies, odds are your enamel is thin. Temporary veneers will deflect cold and heat the way healthy enamel should, ensuring you’ll be perfectly comfortable and able to enjoy more foods during your “waiting period.”
Your Dentist Will See How Well They Function
Temporary veneers can also function as a sort of prototype or trial run. They may not be exactly like the high-quality set you’ll receive later, but your dentist will still be able to see how well they function as part of your smile. If you have trouble chewing or speaking clearly, they’ll take note of the issue and adjust your permanent veneers as needed.
You’ll Get a Preview of The Aesthetics
Finally, temporary veneers allow you to get a sense of what the customized set will look like. Not quite satisfied with the color? Let your dentist know! Worried a particular shape might seriously interfere with your smile aesthetics? You’ll be able to let your dentist know about that, too! This way, your permanent veneers can be altered until they’re absolutely perfect.
At first, it might seem silly to have to wear a temporary set of veneers before receiving the final version. But at the end of the day, temporary veneers will keep your teeth well-protected during the fabrication process, and will give you and your dentist the opportunity to identify details that may need to be adjusted. They can rightfully be considered a necessary part of the dental veneer process!
