After dental implant surgery, it’s important to take care of yourself for a smooth recovery. You might feel hungry because you had to avoid eating for about six hours before the surgery.
Since it might be hard to chew right after surgery, it’s best to eat soft foods for about 10 to 14 days or until your mouth feels better. It’s important to know what foods are okay to eat during this time and which ones to avoid. Here are ten meal ideas for your recovery period:
1. Applesauce
Applesauce is a smooth mix of apples, often with spices or sweeteners. It’s popular in North America and Europe, especially for people recovering from oral surgery. It’s soft, comforting, and nutritious, making it a great choice for after dental implants surgery.
2. Mashed Potato
Mashed potatoes, or mash, consist of boiled or steamed potatoes mashed with milk, butter, salt, and pepper. This side dish pairs well with meat or vegetables and is appreciated for its comforting flavor and creamy consistency. For a variation in texture, lightly mashed potatoes, also known as “smashed potatoes,” provide a different but equally satisfying option, especially post-dental implant surgery.
3. Yogurt
Yogurt is a dairy item created by fermenting milk with bacteria. The bacteria break down the milk sugars during fermentation, resulting in the production of lactic acid. This procedure is responsible for the creamy texture and tangy taste of yogurt. Although yogurt can be produced from various milk types, cow’s milk is the preferred option. It serves as a beneficial choice following dental implant surgery.
4. Bone Broth
Broth, known as bouillon, is a flavorful liquid created by simmering meat, fish, or vegetables in water briefly. This method draws out the essence and nutrients, resulting in a delicious taste and scent. While broth is enjoyable on its own, it is commonly utilized as a foundation for soups, gravies, and sauces. Its robust flavor and adaptability render it a fundamental element in numerous dishes, making it a suitable option post dental implant surgery.
5. Egg
Humans and their hominid ancestors have been consuming eggs for millions of years, with chicken eggs being a popular choice. In Southeast Asia, the tradition of collecting and eating chicken eggs dates back to around 1500 BCE. Eggs are considered a valuable dietary option post dental implant surgery due to their high protein content and ease of digestion. Crafting an omelet with eggs and vegetables provides a nutritious and balanced meal, further enhancing their nutritional advantages post dental implant surgery.
6. Pudding
Pudding is a versatile and delicious treat that can be enjoyed as a dessert or a savory dish. For individuals with recently placed dental implants who desire sweets, gelatin and pudding provide excellent choices. These soft treats are easy on the digestive system, bursting with flavor, and offer a gratifying treat while supporting recovery after oral surgery. They are a suitable option following dental implant surgery.
7. Scrambled Eggs
Scrambled eggs consist of eggs mixed with salt, butter, or oil and cooked until they create soft curds. They are a suggested food for individuals recuperating from dental implant surgery because they are easy to consume and possess a mild texture, thereby alleviating discomfort during the recovery process. They are an ideal option following dental implant surgery.
8. Ice Cream
Ice cream is a frozen treat created from milk or cream, sweetened with sugar or a replacement, and infused with flavors such as cocoa, vanilla, or fruits. Occasionally, food coloring and stabilizers are included to enhance its appearance and texture. The cold and creamy texture of ice cream makes it a perfect option following dental implant treatments, easing discomfort and offering a pleasant treat throughout the healing process. It is a suitable selection post dental implant surgery.
9. Cooked Vegetables
Cooked vegetables are highly recommended after dental implant procedures. Cooking them until they’re soft makes them easier to chew and gentler on the mouth, reducing discomfort during recovery. Plus, cooked vegetables still have their nutritional value, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber important for healing and overall health. Adding a variety of cooked vegetables to meals ensures a balanced diet, promoting optimal recovery after dental implant surgery.
10. Soups
After dental implant surgery, it is advisable to consume soups and broth. During the initial recovery period, opt for thin, broth-like soups as they are easier to consume and gentle on healing tissues. As you advance in recovery, typically after a week, you can switch to heartier soups such as stew and chili for more variety and satisfaction while still being gentle on your mouth. These soups offer hydration and vital nutrients, supporting proper healing and a balanced postoperative diet. They are an excellent option following dental implant surgery.
