If your teeth are decayed or otherwise damaged, a dental filling may be the ideal option to restore the integrity of your smile. In addition to protecting your teeth from additional harm, dental fillings today have a natural appearance, so they blend in with the rest of your tooth. However, you may be wondering how long you can expect your filling to last. Continue reading to learn what patients can typically expect out of their filling.
How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?
The lifespan of a dental filling typically depends on a variety of factors, including its location and your lifestyle choices. On average, fillings last approximately 10 years. However, the type of material used and the health of the overlying tooth also impact its lifespan. Ultimately, by maintaining a healthy diet, excellent oral hygiene, and avoiding bad habits, fillings can last upwards of two decades.
When Do I Need a New Filling?
Unfortunately, dental fillings don’t last forever. It’s always a good deal to keep an eye out for signs that may indicate that you need to have your dental filling replaced. Here are some of the most prominent signs:
• Your filling is cracked
• You’re experiencing tooth pain
• You have increased tooth sensitivity
• Your filling is discolored
• Your tooth has been injured
• Your filling is old
How Can I Expand the Life of My Dental Filling?
To help your dental filling last as long as possible, you need to take all of the right steps to care for it. Here are some tips to help you keep your new restoration healthy:
• Brush your teeth every day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste
• Floss your teeth every night before bed
• Keep up with your six-month cleanings and checkups
• If you have bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching), ask your dentist about nightguards
• Wear a mouthguard when participating in contact sports
• Avoid hard and sticky foods that could damage your fillings
• Limit the consumption of dark pigmented foods and beverages, as they can stain your fillings
• Go easy on sugary and starchy goods. Over time, they can contribute to the development of tooth decay.
Dental fillings don’t last forever. However, with modern dental technology, they can restore your damaged teeth for many years into the future when you care for them properly. This way, you can continue showing off a strong, healthy smile!
