If you are missing one or more teeth, you have probably heard about dental implants. They look natural, feel permanent, and can last a lifetime. But you may be asking yourself — am I actually a good candidate for dental implants in Scottsdale? That is one of the most common questions Dr. Ambreen Sandhu hears at Belmont Dentistry Scottsdale. The honest answer is that many people qualify, but not everyone does right away.
Candidacy depends on several factors that go beyond just missing a tooth. Your age, bone health, overall medical history, and lifestyle all play a role. Understanding these factors can help you feel confident walking into your consultation. This guide breaks it all down in plain language.
What Makes Someone a Good Candidate for Dental Implants in Scottsdale?
The foundation of a dental implant is the jawbone. The titanium post must fuse securely with bone in a process called osseointegration. Without enough healthy bone, that fusion cannot happen properly. That is why bone density is one of the first things we evaluate.
Beyond bone, your overall health matters significantly. Implants are a surgical procedure. Your body needs to heal well after placement. Patients in good general health with no uncontrolled chronic conditions tend to have the best outcomes.
Here are the core traits that make someone a strong candidate:
- One or more missing teeth with healthy surrounding gum tissue
- Sufficient jawbone density to support the implant post
- Non-smoker or willingness to quit during the healing process
- No uncontrolled diabetes or autoimmune conditions
- Good oral hygiene habits and commitment to follow-up care
- Fully developed jawbone — typically adults 18 and older
Even if you do not check every box today, that does not mean implants are off the table. Many patients become candidates after addressing underlying issues first.
Does Age or Bone Loss Disqualify You From Getting Implants?
Age alone rarely disqualifies someone from dental implants. Adults in their 60s, 70s, and beyond receive implants successfully every year. What matters more than age is your current bone and tissue health. An older patient with good bone density may be a better candidate than a younger one with significant bone loss.
Bone loss is more common than people realize. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that area begins to shrink over time. This is called bone resorption. The longer a tooth has been missing, the more bone may have deteriorated.
If you have experienced bone loss, you still have options. A bone graft procedure can rebuild the jaw before implant placement. This adds time to your treatment plan, but it makes implants possible for many patients who assumed they were not eligible. Dr. Sandhu will evaluate your bone levels using digital imaging during your consultation at Belmont Dentistry Scottsdale.
How Do Health Conditions and Smoking Affect Your Candidacy?
Certain health conditions can complicate implant surgery or slow healing. Uncontrolled diabetes is one of the most significant concerns. High blood sugar interferes with the body’s ability to heal after surgery. Patients with well-managed diabetes, however, often qualify with proper coordination between their dentist and physician.
Other conditions that may require closer evaluation include:
- Autoimmune disorders that affect healing
- Blood clotting disorders or patients on blood thinners
- Active gum disease or untreated oral infections
- Radiation therapy history in the head or neck area
- Osteoporosis, particularly when treated with certain medications
Smoking is one of the most honest conversations we have with patients. Tobacco use significantly reduces implant success rates. Nicotine restricts blood flow and impairs the healing process. We strongly encourage smokers to quit — or at minimum pause — during the months surrounding implant surgery. It is not a dealbreaker, but it is a serious risk factor worth discussing openly.
The good news is that many of these conditions are manageable. A thorough health review during your consultation helps us create a plan that is realistic and safe for your specific situation.
What If You Are Not Ready Yet — What Are Your Next Steps?
Not being an immediate candidate does not mean you are stuck with gaps or dentures forever. It simply means there may be preparatory steps before implants are placed. This is more common than most patients expect, and it is entirely manageable with the right guidance.
Possible preparatory treatments include bone grafting, gum disease treatment, or stabilizing a systemic health condition. Some patients need tooth extractions or existing dental work addressed first. Each of these steps builds the foundation that makes your implant successful long term.
While you are preparing for implants, you may also want to explore other smile options. If you are considering broader cosmetic improvements, Cosmetic Dentistry Scottsdale patients often combine treatments like veneers or teeth whitening with implants for a complete smile transformation. Similarly, patients across the valley researching Cosmetic Dentistry Scottsdale services find that a comprehensive approach yields the most natural-looking results.
Dr. Sandhu takes a collaborative, patient-first approach at every stage. You will never be rushed into a procedure you are not ready for. The goal is always your long-term oral health and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Am I too old to get dental implants?
No, there is no upper age limit for dental implants. Adults of any age can qualify as long as they have adequate bone density and are in reasonable general health. Older patients receive successful implants every day. Age is far less important than your current bone and gum health.
What happens if I do not have enough bone for implants?
If you have experienced bone loss, a bone graft procedure can rebuild the jawbone before implant placement. This adds time to your overall treatment plan but makes implants possible for many patients who previously thought they were not eligible. Dr. Sandhu will assess your bone levels using digital imaging during your consultation.
Can smokers get dental implants?
Smokers can receive implants, but tobacco use significantly increases the risk of implant failure. Nicotine restricts blood flow and slows the healing process. We strongly recommend patients quit smoking — or at least pause during healing — to protect their investment and improve success rates.
How long does the dental implant process take?
The full process typically takes several months from placement to final restoration. This timeline accounts for healing and osseointegration, the process by which the implant fuses with the jawbone. Some patients may require additional preparatory steps that extend the timeline further. Your personalized plan will include a clear estimated schedule.
Is the dental implant consultation at Belmont Dentistry Scottsdale painful?
The consultation itself is completely comfortable. Dr. Sandhu will review your health history, examine your mouth, and take digital X-rays or scans. There is no pain involved in the evaluation process. The goal is simply to gather the information needed to determine whether you are a candidate and what your treatment path looks like.
